Manacor

Manacor in the east of Mallorca is the second largest city on the island. However, the small town with a population of around 30,000 is about 10 times smaller than Palma. Compared to the capital, Manacor is a small provincial nest, but it certainly has its charm. The town has largely been spared from mass tourism. In the old, original-looking town center with well-designed pedestrian areas, the Mallorcan variant of Catalan is still the predominant language. The large church of Nuestra Senyora dels Dolors with its 80-meter-high tower, which dominates the cityscape, is worth seeing. The church itself is unfortunately only open for visits in the morning.

The town is known beyond Mallorca for several products: the artificial pearls, the furniture, the ceramics and the olive wood products from Manacor. You should visit the pearl factory just outside the town. You drive past it when you come from Palma. The pearls are made from fish scales and look very similar to real pearls. Unfortunately, the artificial pearls are not cheap either. Also interesting and not to be missed is the „Oliv-Art“ exhibition building and sales building for olive wood products.

The best day of the week for a trip to Manacor is market day, Monday. The large market is a real shopping market, especially for clothing, household goods and food. The prices at the weekly market are reasonable. Ceramics and olive products are also sold at the market. Some of the offerings at the Manacor market are aimed at tourists, but most are not.

Connections: Manacor is the central transport hub in the east of Mallorca. Buses run to Porto Cristo and Palma approximately every hour. There are also many bus connections to Cala Millor, Cala Ratjada, Inca, Cales de Mallorca and other places in the east of Mallorca. A cheaper and more interesting way to get to Palma and Inca is by train. A train runs every hour to Palma de Mallorca via Inca. The fare to Palma is around 6 euros in 2025. The train is therefore slightly cheaper than the bus.

Pearls Manacor

Manacor is world-famous for the production of high-quality artificial pearls. These pearls, often referred to as „Mallorca pearls“, are not obtained from natural oysters, but are made using intricate craftsmanship.

Here is everything you need to know about pearl production in Manacor:

Majorica pearls

The Majorica company is the best-known brand for pearl production in Manacor. It was founded in 1890 and stands for the highest quality and tradition in the production of artificial pearls.

Special features of Majorica pearls:

The pearls are made from a glass or crystal core that is covered with a layer of organic materials. This layer perfectly imitates the structure of real pearls.

They are resistant to scratches, perfume and sunlight and retain their shine for decades.

Visit to the pearl factories

In Manacor you can experience pearl production up close. Many factories offer tours where you can observe the manufacturing process.

Highlights of the factory visits:

A factory outlet where you can buy jewelry directly.

Buying pearls

The shops and boutiques in Manacor offer a wide selection of pearl jewelry – from traditional to modern. It is worth looking here for special souvenirs or gifts.

Why are the pearls from Manacor so popular?

They look deceptively similar to real pearls, but cost significantly less.

Thanks to their robust surface, they are more durable than many natural pearls.

The combination of tradition and modern technology makes them unique.
