Soller

Soller, located 30 km north of Palma, is a small town (approximately 13,000 inhabitants in 2025). Interesting things in Soller are the old town, the market and the historic railway and tram. The port town of Port de Soller, about 4 km away, is also popular with tourists. Among the locals, Soller is known for its high-quality oranges. The juice oranges are a little smaller than usual, sweet and very flavorful.

Old town of Soller: The old town of Soller has been largely preserved. The narrow streets and the central square Placa de Constitucio with the famous church of Sant Bartomeu invite you to take a stroll and/or go shopping. There are some good street cafes on the Placa de Constitucio where you can enjoy the peaceful and quiet atmosphere of the town. The historic tram sometimes drives across the square on its way to Port de Soller. The parish church of Sant Bartomeu (13th century, architectural style: partly Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque) on the square is the most striking building in the town of Soller. Also worth a visit are the local museum (Casal de Cultura) and the natural history museum (Museo de Ciencias Naturales) in Soller.

Soller market: The central market hall (food) is open daily from Monday to Saturday. However, the large open-air Saturday market is interesting, with many stalls in the alleys and squares of the old town. So, if you have the choice, you should plan a trip to Soller on a Saturday morning. In addition to local food (such as local oranges, cheese, sausage), the market also sells cheap clothing, bags and much more.

The good novel „Pirates in Port de Soller“ by Christiane Döntgen is a good read to get you in the mood for a vacation in Soller.

Railway from Palma de Mallorca to Soller: The historic „Red Lightning“ train was built in 1912. Until then, the Soller valley was cut off from the rest of the island. France was easier to reach by sea than Palma de Mallorca, which is only 20 km away as the crow flies. The mountains could only be overcome in a day’s journey on a donkey or on foot. With the construction of the railway, everything changed. Suddenly Palma was only just under 2 hours away. Until the mid-1990s, the train was by far the most important means of transport for people in the Soller valley. The new road tunnel was opened in 1995. Soller can now be reached from Palma in 20 minutes by car, making it almost a suburb of Palma.

Today the railway mainly transports tourists over the mountains. There are said to be almost a million passengers a year. Despite the high fares, a trip on the historic railway is not to be missed. Both the train itself and the landscape are impressive. The fare on the Palma-Soller or Soller-Palma railway is 20 euros, and 28 euros there and back (as of 2025). Anyone who lives on Mallorca and can prove this with a resident card pays considerably less. The train station in Palma is centrally located on Placa de Espanya. In Soller the train station is right in the centre. Timetable: Currently (winter 2024/2025) the train runs four times a day from Palma to Soller and back again – the journey time is exactly 1 hour.

Port de Soller

The port is about four km from Soller. Port de Soller has grown a lot since the beginning of tourism: a small fishing village with a few houses has developed into a larger tourist resort. Nevertheless, the place has character and is worth a stroll. In addition to the many day tourists, the place is also becoming increasingly popular with holidaymakers. It is an interesting alternative for Mallorca holidaymakers to the overcrowded beaches around Palma. Hotels of all price ranges have been built here in recent years.

Soller – Port de Soller tram: The approximately five-kilometer-long tram was built in 1913. Today it serves mainly as a museum tram for tourists.

The carriages and furnishings date back to the early days of the tram. The one-way fare is €7 (as of January 2025). If you only travel part of the way to Cruce, a ticket costs considerably less. If you want to save money on the return journey, you can also walk (about 1 hour). Tickets are available on the train, as they used to be, from the conductor.

Organized tour from Palma to Soller and surroundings: If you can spend a few euros more and want to enjoy a stress-free, beautiful day, you should book a day trip to Soller. The excursion, which starts in the morning at the train station in Palma, includes the trips described above on the historic „Red Blitz“ train from Palma to Soller and the trip on the old tram to Port de Soller. In the afternoon, the minibus continues to the village of painters and artists Deia and to what is probably the most beautiful village on the island of Mallorca, Valldemossa. In all four places mentioned, the sights are explained in a short guided tour. Another highlight of the day trip to the Tramuntana region is a visit to the museum of the artist Josep Coll Bardolet, who lived in this part of Mallorca and died in Valldemossa in 2007 at the age of 95 (impressionism, watercolors).
